Larry the Lawyer sent in a request for a feature on Gold. Tired of his day job, and looking to hit it rich, he asked for an arm chair quarterbacks take on where he should whip out that Dyson sphere powered MineLab GPZ 7000, costing only 6.2 troy oz. of gold in 2019 for the $8k monster, it's time for it to earn it's keep. So without further ado, we bring you the tear down of THE definitive source of unclaimed Ag mineral, the complete teardown of all 180MB of USGS assessment performed in 1998, the pinnacle of CD-ROMS and Windows 95 installations, this CDROM only data set is shredded and analyzed to bring you, our sMoreMail readers the last gold country, the one the government tried to tell you about 20 years ago, but no one listened! so sit back, get your clicky-scroller finger lubed up and proceed to THE GOLD!

The Cowboys

Authored by some of the finest USGS mineralogists, ranging in backgrounds from average joe SCHMOE, some electron jockeys to get those coasters made - and what were probably the top of their class Colorado School of Mines graduates (hey, it's only a few miles from 303 Denver USGS) this rag tag group of modern day yellow mineral wranglers brought you the goods. A big thanks to 287 red blooded americans for digging in, crunching the data to provide you a report that your tax dollars paid for, AND YOU NEVER READ! wow.. now that's just shameful. Sourcing the data and black arts to find Gold

Using State of the art SGI computers to run 121 statistical algorithms (the predecessors to AI-Artificial Intelligence, and ML-Machine Learning) these Scientists and gold hounds used the black art of statistics and data sampling taken from core samples right under your feet and run through chemical composition machines to spit out a list of where you should dig. This is the relevant section of the report summarizing the teams findings:

The estimate of the amount of gold in undiscovered mineral deposits in the United States ranged from 13,000 t at a 90-percent probability to 22,000 t at a 10-percent probability. The mean estimate of gold in undiscovered deposits was 18,000 t. Estimated amounts of gold are listed by region in table 3 and shown by major deposit type in figure 4. Nearly one-quarter of the gold was estimated to be contained in undiscovered porphyry copper deposits. Other major deposit types were hot spring gold, epithermal vein, plutonic porphyry gold, sediment-hosted gold, Au-Ag-Te veins, and low-sulfide gold-quartz vein deposits. The identified gold resource was estimated to be 15,000 t. Past production was estimated to be 12,000 t. The total discovered gold resource in the United States was estimated to be 27,000 t. When compared to the last major assessment made in 1973, this what the team had to say:

According to Simon and Prinz (1973), hypothetical and speculative gold resources, although they could not be estimated as accurately as reserves, were probably large compared with then-current U.S. gold production or consumption but small compared with total world reserves. If one correlates their words with figures for U.S. gold production and total world reserves for 1972, then an estimate of undiscovered gold resources can be obtained that ranges from 56 t to 31,000 t. The largest potential resources of gold were considered to be contained in Tertiary or Cretaceous placer deposits or auriferous conglomerates, followed, in decreasing order of magnitude, by disseminated, lode, “bonanza,” and other placer deposits (Simon and Prinz, 1973). The USGS 1998 mean estimate of 18,000 t of gold in undiscovered deposits, with a range of 13,000 to 22,000 t, was well within the range of the 1973 estimate. Even though significant undiscovered gold placer deposits remain in Tertiary or Cretaceous placer deposits in the Northern Rocky Mountain region, the 1998 team was unable to estimate the quantity of gold because of difficulties in applying grade and tonnage concepts. As a result, these potential resources in the Northern Rocky Mountains have been supplanted by potential resources for undiscovered sediment-hosted and hot spring gold deposits in the Great Basin and undiscovered plutonic porphyry gold deposits in Alaska. In addition, it was estimated that the amounts of gold contained in undiscovered porphyry copper deposits in the Basin and Range province and in epithermal vein and low-sulfide gold-quartz vein deposits in the Western United States and Alaska were significant. The GPS coordinates, for those of you that are too lazy to read the original report, or send an email to get the interactive map. 999 is sMoreMail analysis that 'SIG' in the original report means significant. now how significant? who knows. unknown and blanks were removed from the entire data set. We then took some liberties with the USGS data models and used past findings with a super sophisticated Logarithm algorithm weight layed over the future prediction models to say hey... if they found a metric ton of it before, theres probably still something interesting around there, so we gave some high strength weight to previous finds. Now you, as the new gold hunter, where do you go.... do you hunt down those 11 regions and risk claim jumping? or better yet, maybe you start taking a real good look at those blue 1 dots, and asking yourself... hmm... a little something here, i'm not too greedy, and there won't be trouble with a double barrel shotgun on the other side of that barbed wire fence you just jumped with your broken down quad. if your hunting the 11's, trade in the Jeep with the lift kit and big tires for one of them RZR XP Turbo S at $28k and then add another $30k in upgrades - that will make the old MineLab GPZ 7000 look like a paperweight, and just remind yourself that the '7000 wont' get you away from the front of a sawed off double barrel like the TurboS Can!
